LKF created inspection videos to assist farmers and farm workers.
In 2018, the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) was enacted in response to changes in the global food system and the understanding of foodborne illnesses and the consequences they present. Among the seven major rules that uphold the FSMA is the Produce Safety Rule, which establishes mandatory standards for safe growing, harvesting, packing, and holding of produce that is grown for human consumption.
Recognizing the implications that this directive would have on produce farms throughout the state, the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD) contacted LKF Marketing to develop six videos that would educate farm owners and workers on how to comply with the new rule.
Video topics include What To Expect During an Inspection for Farm Owners, What to Expect During an Inspection for Farmworkers, Technical Assistance for Farm Owners, and Portable Toilet Facility Law. For the inspection-focused videos, Spanish language versions were created in addition to English.
Once the project was completed, the videos were uploaded to MDARD’s YouTube channel and embedded within the MDARD website. Partners at the MSU Extension and Michigan Food & Farming Systems shared the videos on their sites as well.
Our work on the inspection videos received an Award of Distinction from the 2020 Communicator Awards.
